While Florida tends to have some great weather for motorcycle riding, we’re not immune to summer rainstorms. If you still want or need to ride and the roads are wet, there are some precautions you can take to keep yourself safe on the highway. Read on to learn what you can do to protect yourself when you’re riding your motorcycle in the rain.

Stay Visible

Your black jacket and black motorcycle might look really cool, but they’re going to be very hard to see on a gray day. Wear a blaze-orange vest over your darker riding gear, or invest in light-colored and reflective riding gear. Reflective tape can be applied to your helmet and your bike, and you can also upgrade your motorcycle’s lights so that you’ll be able to see the way ahead.

Be Vigilant

You'll also have to be more mindful of the road conditions ahead and the traffic around you than usual. Watch out for obstacles like deep potholes or steel plates in the road (which can cause you to slide out). Make sure you can brake well in advance of a traffic jam, and look for ways to escape (grass medians or road shoulders) if you can’t stop in time.

Ride With Care

Slowing down significantly is a good idea when it starts pouring outside. You’re already going to struggle with traction due to the water on the asphalt, so why add excess speed to it? Stay five to ten miles under posted speed limits and make all of your maneuvers carefully.
