Motorcycle Windshield Types

When it comes to bike windshields, you’ll have a lot of decisions to make. First you have to choose whether you want a permanent or removable option. A permanent one, also known as fixed mounted, is installed once and you never have to worry about it again. These are a great choice if you know exactly what you want for your motorcycle. On the other hand, removable options (also called quick-release) gives you the flexibility to remove or add as you see fit. Some riders may prefer to pop off the windshield for easier transportation or storage.

Your next big decision is choosing the material. The most common choice which is also the most affordable is acrylic. This option is more aesthetically pleasing in the sense that it won’t yellow over time. A con of acrylic is that it will scratch and shatter more easily. Another popular material is polycarbonate. This material is sturdy and often used in helmet face shields and race car windows. It’s more flexible and is harder to chip. However, polycarbonate will yellow over time.

One more decision you have to make is whether or not you want a tint. Tinting can help you to see better in situations with high glare like riding on sunny days or when another motorist’s headlights shine at night. Make sure to check your local laws since there could be restrictions on tint.

Height

When you install a bike windshield, you need to ensure that the height is set up correctly. The ideal height will depend on you. This includes your height, sitting height, and riding posture.

If the windshield is too tall, your field of vision will go through it. This could be dangerous if an obstacle like rain or mud hits the surface and impairs your vision. If your windshield is too short, you won’t get protection from the wind and rain. A good rule of thumb is to align your nose with the op of it and match it to the width or your bike.
