If you’re on the hunt for a used motorcycle, you may be wondering how you can get the most bang for your buck. One question that buyers often have is what kind of life expectancy a used motorcycle has. The answer depends upon a number of factors, including the age of the bike, how it was maintained, and how it was ridden. Here are some ways you can determine whether the used motorcycle you’re looking at will last you for years to come.

Age

The first factor you’ll want to look at is the age of the bike. The more recently it was manufactured, the more likely it is that you’ll get a lot of use out of the bike. However, this is not to say that vintage bikes aren’t worth your time: a well-maintained older bike from a reputable brand that’s known for making quality motorcycles would be an excellent buy as well.

Maintenance

Next, you should get the maintenance history from the seller so you can determine whether the bike was kept in good condition. Regular oil changes, part replacements, and professional tune-ups are positive signs. If there isn’t a maintenance history to speak of, or if it seems patchy, you may want to move on. You can also sometimes just tell by looking at a used motorcycle if it’s been kept up: a bike with obvious wear and tear, including rust and balding tires, is obviously one that’s been sorely neglected.

Riding History

Finally, you’ll want to ask the seller about how the motorcycle was ridden. Did they ride it for leisurely weekend jaunts or did they ride it every single day on a long commute? The more often the bike has been ridden and the harder the conditions it endured, the less life it has left in it.
