As a motorcyclist, you likely do everything you can to ensure the safety of your rides. Still, the possibility of an accident exists, and you’re at more risk on your bike than you would be in a car. This is why you have to be proactive about your safety so that you can do everything in your power to prevent a crash. Try these strategies to reduce your accident risk on your motorcycle.

Make Yourself Visible

A motorcyclist on a black bike wearing black gear against gray asphalt is going to be really tough to see, especially if visibility is already limited by the weather or sunset. So make sure you stand out by wearing bright reflective riding gear. Even a blaze-orange safety vest thrown over your black jacket can help significantly, as can applying riding tape to your helmet and bike.

You can also install brighter LED lights on your motorcycle to help illuminate your path and ensure that other motorists can clearly see you.

Remain Vigilant

Not paying attention while you ride is a luxury you don’t have as a motorcyclist. A simple fender bump for a car becomes a serious hazard for a motorcycle rider. You also can’t trust that other motorists are paying full attention or are in possession of all their faculties, as drunk and tired drivers will share the road with you, for better or worse.

Always watch the road ahead while you ride and keep an eye on the traffic around you so that you can make swift adjustments to avoid a crash. You’ll want to watch for paths to get yourself out of the way of a swerving vehicle, such as riding onto the shoulder or median in an emergency.
