Riding with a Passenger
Sometimes, you don't want to hit the road solo. You want the enjoyment of a buddy's company. It makes the ride better - now you have someone to help navigate and pass the time. It makes the destination better - now you have someone to explore and eat with. Riding with a passenger is great, but it is a unique experience. You'll need to take proactive steps to ensure a smooth experience for all involved. We created the following guide to riding with a passenger below. If you need any supplies or maintenance before your ride, visit Crystal Harley-Davidson®. We proudly serve those in Homosassa, New Port Richey, and Spring Hill, Florida.
Get the Gear
It doesn't matter if you're the driver or the passenger - anyone on a motorcycle needs all the proper gear. They need the proper protection against the elements, the hazards of the road, and in case of a crash. Start by figuring out what your passenger already owns. You'll need to buy or borrow the rest. Don't think "it's just a short drive around the block". If they get onto a motorcycle, they need to wear all the proper gear.
The first important piece of gear is the helmet. If possible, equip them with a full-face helmet to get the best protection. Make sure the helmet fits! Too tight and it'll be uncomfortable. Too loose and it won't give proper protection. They'll also need a form of eye protection, which can be a visor on the helmet or goggles.
They'll also need outerwear. Full-length clothing protects skin from the elements and in the event of a crash. A riding jacket and riding pants are ideal. If there's a chance of rain on your ride, it helps to also bring along waterproof outerwear.
Prepare for the Ride
Cruising around town with a passenger is different than cruising around alone. You'll need to take some proactive steps to ensure a smooth experience for you both. Start by ensuring your motorcycle is capable of two passengers. Otherwise, you could encounter issues on the road.
Next, ensure your passenger is ready for the ride. Review safety practices with them. Talk through how it'll feel when you turn, brake, and accelerate. You don't want them caught off-guard or leaning in a way that makes things harder for you.
If you passenger has never been on a motorcycle before, you'll want to take a test ride. Think of things from their perspective - they have no control as they dart around traffic at high speeds. It can be a bit unnerving if you aren't used to it. A test drive (or even several test drives) can build up their confidence and work out any kinks before your actual trip.
You'll also want to establish methods of communication in advance. Figure out a way for your passenger to communicate the following: slow down, pull over, let's get food, let's find a bathroom, I need a break, and let's go home. If your helmets have Bluetooth capacity, use that. Otherwise, you can use hand signals or taps.
Before you can hit the road with your pal, you need a well-running motorcycle. If you are experiencing any performance issues, bring your bike to Crystal Harley-Davidson®.
